Smile: the universal signal for joy and appreciation

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day. ~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, accredited to H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

Recently in Tibet, I had

a hard time communicating with peo

ple. I speak Mandarin, but that only got me so far in the remote region where we were working. I thought I needed to speak Tibetan to really be able to speak to the majority of the people. I felt it was hard not being able to tell others how I truly felt–to adequately express my appreciation, or to convey to them the joy I felt from working with them.

What to do?

Here’s an applicable tip from Og Mandino, in the Scroll Marked II:

“In silence and to myself I will address him and say I LOVE YOU. Though spoken in silence these words will shine in my eyes, unwrinkle my brow, bring a smile to my lips, and echo in my voice; and his heart will be opened.”

Try it out. Throughout this day, try out Og’s challenge. Offer a smile and warm a heart. You never know who is contemplating hateful personal messages, or who simply needs a reason to be happy. “A smile creates change. A smile changes moods” (Carl Weathers).
